An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of dietary copper (Cu) on performance, carcass characteristics, and lipid metabolism in Simmental steers. Thirty-six Simmental steers (329.3 +/-11.4 kg) were stratified by weight and randomly assigned to treatments. Treatments consisted of the following: control (no supplemental Cu) and 10 or 40 mg Cu/kg DM from Cu sulfate. Each treatment consisted of six replicate pens, with each pen containing two steers. A corn silage-soybean meal-based diet was fed for 56 d. Steers were then switched to a high concentrate diet. Performance was not affected by treatment during the growing or finishing phases. Plasma Cu concentrations were higher (P < 0.05) in steers receiving supplemental Cu by d 56 of the growing phase and remained higher (P < 0.05) at all 28-d sampling periods during the finishing phase. Liver Cu concentrations were higher (P < 0.001) in steers receiving supplemental Cu at the end of the growing phase and on d 84 and at the end of the finishing phase. Steers supplemented with 40 mg Cu had higher (P < 0.001) liver Cu concentrations than those supplemented with 10 mg Cu/kg DM. Serum and longissimus muscle cholesterol concentrations were similar between treatments. Longissimus muscle and backfat fatty acid composition was similar between treatments. These results indicate that Cu supplementation given to Simmental steers increased Cu status but had no effect on performance, carcass characteristics, or lipid or cholesterol metabolism.  相似文献

Objective To investigate the effects of two doses (200 and 400 mg) of a water-soluble gonadotrophin-releasing hormone vaccine on the ovarian activity of 2-year-old fillies.
Design A controlled vaccination dose rate experiment.
Animals Six 2-year-old Australian Stock Horse fillies were randomly allocated to three treatment groups: unvaccinated controls, those receiving 200 mg of the vaccine and those receiving 400 mg of the vaccine.
Results Ovarian activity of the treated fillies was suppressed at the peak of the breeding season while that of the untreated controls continued normally. The control fillies displayed oestrous activity and behaviour. Suppression of ovarian activity occurred for 25 and 30 weeks in the 200 and 400 mg groups, respectively. These differences were not significant. Ovarian activity ceased 2 to 3 weeks after primary vaccination. Antibody titres were low (330) until after the booster immunisation when they rapidly peaked at 22,000 and 28,000 in the 200 mg and 400 mg groups, respectively. Plasma progesterone concentrations of the treated fillies remained below 3.18 nmol/L while GnRH was suppressed. The vaccine had no significant effect on plasma androstenedione concentrations. Recovery from the effect of the vaccine was associated with development of ovarian follicles, normal oestrous behaviour and ovulation. Three of the four treated fillies and one of the controls conceived during the next breeding season and foaled normally. All the treated fillies conceived and produced normal foals in the following two breeding seasons.
Conclusion Both dose rates suppressed ovarian function and prevented oestrous behaviour. These effects were reversible and the subsequent fertility of the vaccinated fillies was normal.  相似文献

Veterinary diagnostic endocrinology laboratories frequently receive hemolyzed plasma, serum, or blood samples for hormone analyses. However, except for the previously reported harm done by hemolysis to canine insulin, effects of hemolysis on quantification of other clinically important hormones are unknown. Therefore, these studies were designed to evaluate effects of hemolysis on radioimmunoassay of thyroxine, 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine, progesterone, testosterone, estradiol, cortisol, and insulin in equine, bovine, and canine plasma. In the first experiment, hormones were measured in plasma obtained from hemolyzed blood that had been stored for 18 hours. Blood samples were drawn from pregnant cows, male and diestrous female dogs, and male and pregnant female horses. Each sample was divided into 2 equal portions. One portion was ejected 4 times with a syringe through a 20-gauge (dogs, horses) or 22-gauge (cows) hypodermic needle to induce variable degrees of hemolysis. Two subsamples of the blood were taken before the first and after the first, second, and fourth ejections. One subsample of each pair was stored at 2 to 4 C and the other was stored at 20 to 22 C for 18 to 22 hours before plasma was recovered and stored at -20 C. The second portion of blood from each animal was centrifuged after collection; plasma was recovered and treated similarly as was blood. Concentrations of thyroxine in equine plasma, of 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine, estradiol, and testosterone in equine and canine plasma, and of cortisol in equine plasma were not affected by hemolysis.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Understanding the effects of specific management strategies on yields and economic outcomes on commercial catfish farms could provide useful guidance to catfish farmers on the most profitable sets of production practices. Data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture–National Animal Health Monitoring System (USDA–NAHMS) 2009 survey of production practices on catfish farms in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi were used to identify five clusters of catfish farms that use various stocking densities, channel versus hybrid catfish, different aeration levels, and utilize automated oxygen sensors. The lowest production costs ($1.96/kg) were found in cluster 1 and were followed in order of increasing costs per kilogram of clusters 2 and 4 ($2.16/kg) and cluster 5 ($2.73/kg); the highest cost corresponded to cluster 3 ($2.84/kg). The lowest risk levels corresponded to the clusters with the lowest production costs per kilogram of fish and the highest risk levels to the highest production costs. This analysis demonstrated that different types of management models can achieve similar levels of production costs ($/kg), and it appears that there is not one single economically optimum way to raise catfish. The key to least‐cost production is to balance the use of inputs, their associated costs, and the yield produced to achieve economic efficiency within the farm's overall business and management model.  相似文献

We tested the effect of dose of GnRH superagonist on pituitary and testicular function in a study with four groups of four male dogs. The Controls received blank implants and the other three groups received implants containing 3, 6 or 12 mg deslorelin (d ‐Trp6‐Pro9‐des‐Gly10‐GnRH ethylamide). In all deslorelin‐treated groups, there was initially an acute increase in plasma concentrations of LH and testosterone, followed by declines such that both hormones became undetectable after approximately 12 days. There was a dose–response in some of these early aspects of the hormone profiles. With respect to long‐term effects of treatment, the 12‐mg dose had significantly greater effects than the smaller doses for the duration of minimum testicular volume [366 ± 77, mean ± SEM (3 mg), 472 ± 74 (6 mg), and 634 ± 59 (12 mg) days], absence of ejaculate [416 ± 88 (3 mg), 476 ± 83 (6 mg), and 644 ± 67 (12 mg) days], undetectable plasma concentrations of LH and testosterone [367 ± 64 (3 mg), 419 ± 72 (6 mg), and 607 ± 69 (12 mg) days], the delay until complete recovery of LH and testosterone secretion [394 ± 65 (3 mg), 484 ± 72 (6 mg) and 668 ± 47 (12 mg) days], and the delay until testes had regrown to normal volume [408 ± 77 (3 mg), 514 ± 74 (6 mg), 676 ± 59 (12 mg) days]. The time taken to restore full ejaculates was also longest for the 12‐mg dose: 716 ± 67 (12 mg) days vs 440 ± 66 (3 mg) and 538 ± 83 (6 mg) days after implantation. There was no correlation between delay to recovery of normal ejaculate quality and body mass. We conclude that the dose–response relationship with deslorelin implants is not expressed with respect to the degree of suppression of reproduction, but on the maximum duration of suppression and thus to delay until recovery.  相似文献
